Herniated Disc

A herniated disc, or lumbar herniated intervertebral disc to be precise, refers to a condition where a disk, which acts as a cushion between the vertebrae and the bones, is forced out of its correct position, and some or all of it begins to pressure the nerves. It occurs most frequently in the lumbar area, which is exposed to the most amount of weight and pressure.

Cause and Symptoms

Herniated discs can be caused by degenerative changes stemming from overuse, sudden application of excess torque, change in posture, or incorrect use of the back when lifting heavy objects. In some severe cases, herniated discs can lead to lumbar and sacral pain, leg pain stemming from the back, and numbness in the thighs, calves, and soles of the feet. Also, patients suffering from a herniated disc may experience difficulty walking, and a sharp jolt of pain when carrying or moving an object. If left untreated, a herniated disc may cause urinary and excretory disorders, and even paralysis in the lower extremities.

Treatment

Conservative treatment
In moderate cases, patients can alleviate pain with rest, nerve injection therapy, neuroplasty, Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy, or physical therapy.
Surgical treatment
If non-surgical treatments prove to be ineffective, or if the pain caused by a herniated disc intensifies, patients should consider surgical treatment as there is a risk of further damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.

Rehabilitation after herniated disc surgery

Patients will be required to wear braces for up to two months after surgery (gradually reduce their time wearing the brace).
Patients should refrain from overly strenuous activities, and engage in light Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy and exercise programs designed to restore the range of motion of joints.
After three months, patients must visit their doctor to check whether the discs have fused correctly, and go through Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy for approximately three months.
