Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy

Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy
Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy is a form of rehabilitation therapy that can help people suffering from diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or help patients recover and return to normal life after surgical treatment.
Depending on the physical strength and condition of each individual, various small tools and devices can be used for Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy. Moreover, the increasing popularity of sports is leading to more sports-related injuries. In general, sports-related injuries mostly involve some form of damage to muscles, bones, ligaments, and tendons. These injuries can cause pain and swelling, which can potentially limit the range of motion (ROM), and reduce muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiopulmonary endurance, and overall body balance. In order to recover from an injury, patients should engage in Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy that includes some form of exercise therapy.

Effects

Short-term goals of Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy
Basic first-aid to control edema and reduce pain, restore ROM, rehabilitate nerves, reestablish muscle control, and restore balance.
Long-term goals of Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy
Ensure safe return to sports, prevent recurrence of similar injuries.

Inflammation, Pain Control

When a sports-related injury occurs, the injured area develops an inflammation immediately, which causes pain that stems from nerve damage. The onset of pain and edema leads to a limited ROM of the injured area
As a first-aid measure, patients should apply an ice pack to the injured area, compress, and rest for two to three days after the injury. Patients should also keep the injured area on higher ground
than the rest of the body whenever possible. Pain often impairs movement. To control it, patients can choose between different treatment options, including injection, medication, and Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy.

Restoration of the ROM

ROM of a joint refers to the range in which the joint can move. Flexibility-focused exercises included in Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy can help patients move their injured joints as much as possible within their pain threshold. Exercise must be administered until the injured joints regain their full FOM.

Improvement of Strength and Endurance

Once the ROM is fully restored, the next step is to improve strength and endurance.
Muscle strength refers to the force that muscles can produce, while endurance refers to the duration in which muscles can maintain their strength output. Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy typically starts from low load-bearing exercises to high load-bearing exercises. As for endurance exercises, it is crucial to train repeatedly at low to medium intensity levels.

Return to Sports and Daily Activities

Patients must make sure their body returns to a healthy state in terms of strength, endurance, ROM. Returning to a physical state on par with pre-injury or pre-surgery levels is important to eliminate the risk of re-injury and enjoying sports or other daily activities.
At Sunsoochon Medical, we always make sure to prescribe the right Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy for each injury to help patients return to sports or their daily activities as quickly and safely as possible.
