Scoliosis

Scoliosis refers to an irregularly shaped spine that is bend or curved at an abnormal angle. It typically appears in adolescents and women. Functionally scoliosis leads to abnormal posture or unequal leg lengths, but the effect is not immediately noticeable from the outside. Most cases of scoliosis are structural and morphological abnormalities, which have no specific cause. Meanwhile, double thoracic curvature idiopathic scoliosis typically appears in adolescents.

Classification

Mild
Initially, the shape of the spine begins to change due to deformations to the pelvis. The spine gradually tilts to one side of the body.
Moderate
The spine with a mild tilt to one side begins to lose its balance above the pelvis, leading to the change in the overall spinal curvature.
If left unattended, the initial C-shape can further deteriorate into an S-shape.
Severe
The spine continues to deteriorate, which ultimately compromises the overall balance of the body. The entire spine, from the thoracic area to the lumbar, and pelvis have all changed into an abnormal shape.
This deformation is severe enough to be noticeable from the outside, and in some cases, it may apply excessive pressure to the cardiopulmonary organs.

Symptoms

Some patients develop scoliosis symptoms during their teenage years. They suffer from discomfort in their back, and in some severe cases, the asymmetrical curvature of the spine can be immediately noticeable. Also, students with scoliosis may notice their backpacks sliding off their shoulders to one particular side. When these students wear pants, the waist area may rotate to either the left or right consistently. Furthermore, patients with scoliosis may have legs that are different in length, which can lead to knee or ankle pain. Meanwhile, degenerative scoliosis causes lumbar scoliosis accompanied by chronic lower back pain.

Treatment

Non-surgical treatment
Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy can help to soften up the stiff areas around the spinal column and relax the rigid spinal joints and muscles. It can also alleviate pain by strengthening the cervical spine and its surrounding muscles. In numerous cases, patients can prevent scoliosis by building up strength in their neck and shoulder areas.
