Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis most often occurs in older patients (aged 50 and older) due to the onset of various aging symptoms. As the body ages, fat often builds up around the spinal column, narrowing the space through which nerves can pass through. The resulting compression of spinal nerves ultimately leads to spinal stenosis.

Cause and Symptoms

Spinal stenosis is caused by compression of the spinal canal due to hypertrophy of the joints or ligaments brought on by aging. Numbness in the legs or stinging pain in the lumbar area while walking is a typical symptom of spinal stenosis. Patients are often forced to take frequent breaks or bend forward to alleviate pain. In addition to pain in the lumbar area, some patients develop pain in the lower extremities or a chilling sensation in the hips and legs.

Treatment

Conservative treatment
Patients can wear a custom-made brace, or prevent themselves from sitting down for a long time. Patients should also refrain from overly physical exercises and take part in an Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy program to strengthen their back muscles. If pain does not subside, even with medication, patients may consider surgical treatment.
Surgical treatment
For severe cases of spinal stenosis, non-surgical treatments such as medication, physiotherapy, or injections may have little to no effect. In such a case, surgical treatment can be an option. Microscopic decompression or spinal fusion are the two most popular surgical options available today.

Rehabilitation after herniated disc surgery

Upon receiving surgical treatment, each patient should wear a custom-fitted brace (over time, reduce the time wearing the brace). Patients should refrain from overly strenuous physical activities, and preferably engage in light Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy or exercises designed to restore the joint’s range of motion. Patients should continue to monitor their condition, and continue their Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapy program to improve their symptoms.
